Mariska Hargitay Advocates for Kelli Giddish’s Continuation on Law & Order: SVU

Mariska Hargitay, celebrated for her significant influence in the

television industry as showcased in Variety’s “Power of Women” issue,

faced limitations with her authority on the set of Law And Order:

Special Victims Unit. Despite her status as the lead and her role as

an executive producer, Hargitay could not avert the departure of

Kelli Giddish’s character. “Kelli is my heart. It’s a sore subject. I didn’t have enough say there,” Hargitay expressed to Variety about her co-star’s exit from the series.

Arden Cho on “Partner Track” and Olivia Benson

Detective Amanda Rollins, portrayed by Giddish, exited the show after 12 memorable seasons, in an effort to retain the series’ relevance and modernity, as SVU is currently in its 25th season. Hargitay, advocating for Giddish’s continuance, attempted to negotiate her comeback in the upcoming season. She is earnest about the potent partnership depicted between these two formidable female characters within the show, and admitted feeling undervalued when her perspective was not heeded.

Hargitay also commented on Detective Olivia Benson’s uncertain romance with Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). Despite the strong on-screen chemistry, an anticipated intimate moment did not come to fruition. Hargitay disclosed that this decision was made during the last minute by the franchise’s creator, Dick Wolf, who has the ultimate decision-making power. Despite occasional difficulties, Hargitay views her relationship with Wolf as familial and acknowledges that their collaboration strengthens her. The dynamic between Benson and Stabler remains a key element of intrigue for the audience as well as for Hargitay.
