1883 is considered among many fans to be the best of the Yellowstone spin-offs, but is Season 2 actually happening? Here’s what we know.
Taylor Sheridan’s wildly successful Western drama starring Kevin Costner first hit the small screen in 2018. Since then, it’s gone from strength to strength over the years, with the show now in its fifth season.
While Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 will be the end of the show, at least fans can hold onto the numerous spin-offs including 1923 and 1883, as well the upcoming 1944 and 2024 series. (Yes, that’s a lot of dates — Taylor Sheridan has his way of doing things, okay?)
1883 saw the Dutton family travel west to Oregon with an inexperienced wagon train of European immigrants. Danger and trouble found them at every turn, which helped make it one of the best Yellowstone shows to date. But is there going to be a Season 2? Here’s everything you need to know.
Is 1883 Season 2 happening?
1883 will not be getting a second season, as the show was initially designed to be a one-off.
That means that there’s currently no 1883 Season 2, and unless plans suddenly change, there probably won’t be one. Sorry to all the historical Dutton fans out there.
Was 1883 Season 2 cancelled?
No, it wasn’t cancelled — Taylor Sheridan never had any intention of having 1883 expand beyond one season, saying he “wanted to make a ten-hour movie that ended.”
“I created this peek through time to show you this one specific journey. I’m not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily after, or didn’t,” he told Deadline. “I also wanted to create something you could watch and be completely enthralled and fulfilled, having never seen Yellowstone. Let it live on its own merits.
“For me, as a storyteller it feels close-ended. I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then.”
With 1883 serving as such a well-rounded story of a moment in time, it seems like this was a good decision on his part to keep this particular series contained. Instead of becoming a long-winded multi-season endeavor, 1883 feels like experiencing a small moment of history, short and sweet.
Is Lawmen: Bass Reeves connected to 1883?
No, Lawmen: Bass Reeves is a standalone anthology series produced by Taylor Sheridan, and is not connected to 1883.
While Bass Reeves was initially conceived to be a spiritual successor to 1883 and set in the same universe as Yellowstone, that plan was eventually scrapped to make it an entirely independent project. As such, the two shows are completely unrelated, despite both being produced by Sheridan.
Yellowstone spin-offs explained
If you were watching each Yellowstone series in chronological order, 1883 would be the first place to start.
1883 explores how the Duttons came upon the land that would become the Yellowstone ranch, so it’s a great piece of series history. What’s more, it lays the groundwork for character traits and family values that would later become integral to the rest of the Yellowstone characters throughout time.
You’d then be looking to move on to 1923, which catches up with the Duttons around the Great Depression. This series is a little more globe-trotting, with characters like Spencer Dutton hunting lions in Africa. (Yes, that sounds odd, but go with it.)
After that, you’re skipping straight ahead to the current day Duttons in the main Yellowstone series. Then we have what’s to come: 6666, 1944, and 2024, which are all currently in development. This Sheridan universe is turning out to be a big one.
