Summary
Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis addressed Scott Speedman’s exit as Nick follows Meredith to Boston.
She said that the show has an ” open-door policy .”
Marinis praised the chemistry between Ellen Pompeo and Scott Speedman, telling viewers to stay tuned.
Scott Speedman’s Grey’s Anatomy exit has been discussed by the medical drama’s new showrunner. On the show, Speedman played transplant surgeon Nick Marsh, a character who made a brief appearance in season 14 before returning to join the main cast in season 18 and commence an on-again, off-again relationship with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), who later exited the show midway through season 19. When she returned in the season 20 premiere, Meredith and Nick made up, and it seems that he will also be exiting the show as he follows her to Boston to rekindle their relationship.
Entertainment Weekly recently sat down for an interview with showrunner Meg Marinis to discuss the premiere of Grey’s Anatomy season 20. Without giving any plot developments away, she said “just stay tuned.” She expressed her appreciation of the fact that the show has an “open-door policy,” also sharing her praise of the “amazing chemistry” between Pompeo and Speedman. Read her full quote below:
What’s so amazing about our show is we have an open-door policy, so I think you’re just going to have to tune in to see who pops up. But we love their relationship. I find that they have amazing chemistry. I love that he challenges her and I love that she becomes a little undone by him, too. So I just say stay tuned.
Will Nick Marsh Return to Grey’s Anatomy?

While Grey’s Anatomy’s Nick Marsh may be leaving the hospital, this doesn’t mean that he will stay away from the show forever. He has already returned once after a long hiatus, proving Marinis’ point about the show’s “open-door policy.” In fact, it’s possible that he will return before season 20 is over, as he has so far been designated as a recurring star rather than a guest star.
It seems possible that Speedman’s exit from the main cast is linked to avariety of other projects that the actor is working on. While it’s possible that not every one of these will come to fruition, he is currently attached to three different titles that are in pre-production. Those would be the Peacock horror show Teacup (with Yvonne Strahovski), the Misha Green thriller Sunflower (opposite Jurnee Smollett and Isabel May), and Vaughn Stein’s Cellar Door (opposite Jordana Brewster and Laurence Fishburne).
Cellar Door was previously announced under the title The Offer .
While his schedule likely impacted his ability to make a full comeback on the show, Grey’s Anatomy season 20 returns aren’t exactly uncommon. The season already features the return of characters including Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), Dr. Nico Kim (Alex Landi), and even Meredith herself. Pompeo also remains on board the show as a narrator and executive producer, so she will likely pop in for more cameos in future seasons, which would allow a solid narrative avenue for Speedman to return as Nick alongside her.
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 9/8C.
